RESUMO

Methyl ester sulphonate (MES) is an anionic surfactant that is suitable to be used as an active ingredient in household products. Four palm-based MES compounds with various carbon chains, namely C12, C14, C16 and C16/18 MES, were assayed by the in vitro bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test in the Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, TA100, TA1535, and TA1537 and the Escherichia coli strain WP2 uvrA, with the aim of establishing the safety data of the compounds, specifically their mutagenicity. The test was also carried out on linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS) for comparison. The plate incorporation method was conducted according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Test Guideline 471. All compounds were tested at five analysable non-cytotoxic concentrations, varying from .001 mg/plate to 5 mg/plate, with and without S-9 metabolic activation. All tested concentrations showed no significant increase in the number of revertant colonies compared to revertant colonies of the negative control. The Ames test indicated that each concentration of C12, C14, C16, C16/18 MES, and LAS used in this study induced neither base-pair substitutions nor frame-shift mutations in the S. typhimurium strains TA98, TA100, TA1535, and TA1537 and the E. coli strain WP2 uvrA. The results showed that C12, C14, C16 and C16/18 MES have no potential mutagenic properties in the presence and absence of S-9 metabolic activation, similarly to LAS. Therefore, the MES is safe to be used as an alternative to petroleum-based surfactants for household cleaning products.

BACKGROUND: Evaporation inhibition of water-based space spray insecticides is necessary to prevent the drifting away of fog droplets and the release of insecticidal actives and to prolong suspension time. To address this problem, hygroscopic alcohols, namely propylene glycol and glycerol, were included as adjuvants in water-based d-phenothrin formulations. The performances of glycerol-added formulation (D1) and propylene glycol-added formulation (D2) in terms of droplet size and efficacy against larvae, pupae and adult Aedes aegypti in an open-field environment were examined and compared to the performance of a formulation without adjuvant (negative control). RESULTS: No significant difference in droplet size was observed between the formulations and fogging methods. The efficacy of cold fogs was significantly higher than thermal fogs for all formulations. D2 was found to be most effective against adult Ae. aegypti, followed by D1 and the negative control. D1 and D2 provided complete knockdown and mortality in adult Ae. aegypti at 10 and 25 m for cold and thermal fogging, respectively. However, all d-phenothrin formulations possessed minimal efficacy on immature Ae. aegypti. CONCLUSION: The incorporation of non-toxic alcohols as adjuvants in water-based space spray insecticides increased efficacy against adult Ae. aegypti, a major vector for dengue. Propylene glycol was discovered to induce higher adulticidal efficacy than glycerol. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

In the title sulfonate derivative, C(24)H(26)O(9)S(3), all atoms apart from those of one of the 4-methyl-benzene-sulfonate residues lie approximately in a disc; the dihedral angles between the approximately orthogonal benzene ring and those in the plane are 74.53 (9) and 67.79 (11)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are consolidated into the three-dimensional architecture by C-H⋯O inter-actions. One of the 4-methyl-benzene-sulfonate residues is disordered over two almost parallel positions; the major component refined to a site-occupancy factor of 0.918 (2).
